SANTA ANA (CNS) - A man who was earlier subdued by Santa Ana police died today, triggering an automatic investigation that is routine in in-custody deaths.
The identify of the man who was involved in a hit-and-run and led police on a chase Tuesday afternoon was not immediately released. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the man, but a fingerprint analysis will be done when the autopsy is scheduled Friday.
Police responded about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday to a hit-and-run crash at 1800 North Broadway, Santa Ana police Commander Jose Gonzalez said. A responding officer spotted a suspect vehicle and began pursuit, which led to a parking lot at 102 N. Main St., Gonzalez said.
The chase, which lasted about 15 minutes, was complicated when officers were told during the pursuit that the man was armed with a handgun, Gonzalez said.
Police used a ``less lethal'' projectile and a police dog to subdue the suspect, Gonzalez said. He was taken to OC Global Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:34 a.m. Thursday, Gonzalez said.
