LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Cleanup efforts are underway after a water main break in Hollywood that opened a sinkhole and caused evacuations.

It happened on Fountain Avenue near Beachwood around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange said water from the broken pipe shot up 30 feet in the air.

At one point, firefighters felt a rumble on the ground as a sinkhole began to form.

“The rear wheels of the fire engine unfortunately sank down into that sinkhole,” Prange said, adding that the fire truck was able to “pull itself out of the hole and drive clear of the hazard.”

Nearby homes were evacuated. A woman was rescued by firefighters after the roof of her residence caved-in.

No injuries were reported, but the home was declared unsafe.
