“I’m not a super emotional person, so the fact that I cried a little bit today is a little weird for me,” the singer-songwriter said during her acceptance speech. Ashanti’s momager held on to a souvenir star for two decades, in hopes that her daughter would be honored with a real Hollywood star one day. On Tuesday (April 7), the R&B legend shared the milestone moment with her family, friends, and her team.
Her longtime collaborator Ja Rule and actress Tishina Arnold were notably present for the ceremony. “Those are my people. Ja is my brother, we’ve made history together and it wouldn’t be the same without him,” Ashanti told Billboard. “With Tichina, it was so important to have a Black woman representing and continuing that narrative of women empowerment,” she added.

This month marks the 20th anniversary of Ashanti’s self-titled debut album. Ashanti premiered at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and charted for 55 weeks. The album features timeless hits like “Foolish” and “Happy.” She also earned three GRAMMY nominations for Best New Artist, Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 45th Annual GRAMMY Awards.
“I’m shocked, stunned and over the top grateful. This is a staple in my career and the fact that it will be here forever is a big deal,” Ashanti additionally told Billboard moments after receiving her star. Following the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, Ashanti and her loved ones enjoyed a lavish luncheon presented by PrettyLittleThing.
