Here are 5 Philadelphia 76ers players I was wrong about it, because hey, even the best don't get them all right.
5. Nikola Vučević
The Sixers drafted Vucevic with the 16th overall pick in 2011, three spots ahead of Tobias Harris and 14 spots ahead of Jimmy Butler, ironically. I mean, who thought Vuc would become an All-Star? I sure didn't. Philly traded him in the Andrew Bynum deal, a catastrophic deal in every way, but losing Vucevic was the least of our concerns at the time.
Now, the dude averages 20-10-4 and, in 2019-20, was a 33% three-point shooter on a career-high 4.6 attempts! He's sneaky one of the best bigs in the game.
4. Lou Williams
Williams was a second-round pick of the 76ers out of High School back in 2005, so expectations weren't high. Lou Will played his first seven seasons in Philly and was a decent role player, but nothing more. We didn't think much of it when he left Philly. However, late in his career he has blossomed into the game's best sixth-man and one of the best scoring guards in the NBA. He is averaging 20 points a game for the first time in his career over his last 2-plus seasons with the Clippers.
3. K.J. McDaniels
The first pick in the second-round of the 2014 by Sam Hinkie. Averaged 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks a game as a junior at Clemson. The kid can jump out of the gym! He was the quintessential STEAL...except, he wasn't. McDaniels has bounced around the NBA and has landed in the G-League.
2. Michael Carter-Williams
I've never seen an NBA player have such a good, but fake, rookie season in my life. MCW averaged 16.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 1.9 steals, and 0.6 blocks in 34.5 minutes per game his rookie season. But we were fooled. It was all volume based. The Sixers were tanking and MCW was the guy with the ball, racking up the stats. He was traded a few seasons later and has now been on five teams in six years, currently averaging 7.2 points in 18 minutes per game with the Magic.
1. Markelle Fultz
Such an obvious number one, but truly one of the weirdest stories in the history of sports. What a trade we thought that was. Markelle Fultz was the perfect, three-level scoring combo guard to compliment Ben Simmons. He was long, athletic, and could score from anywhere on the floor. But...he forgot how to shoot. So were we really wrong? Who forgets how to shoot?
