McCutchen's clutch hit isn't enough in Phillies' first loss

Andrew McCutchen is clutch.

David Robertson? Not so much.

Robertson had a horrendous ninth inning on Wednesday in the Phillies' 9-8 loss to the Washington Nationals, finishing off what was a disapointing day from all of the team's staff, starting with Aaron Nola. After giving up a double to start the inning, Robertson walked three Nationals in a row to give the Nationals the win. The reliever didn't record a single out.

The team looked like they were going to pull off an amazing comeback when McCutchen came up with the bases loaded in the top of the 8th inning and the Phillies trailing 6-4 to face Nationals reliever Kyle Barraclough. McCutchen was already 0-4 with three strikeouts, but that didn't phase him. McCutchen lined a bases-clearing double to center field, scoring all three base runners, including Scott Kingery on an incredible slide to avoid the catcher.

The hit gave the Phillies a 7-6. The next batter, Jean Segura, singled scoring McCutchen who read the hit perfectly. The Phillies now lead 8-6 in the top of the 8th.

The Phillies erased a 6-2 deficit after Aaron Nola struggled, allowing five hits and six earned runs in just 3.0 innings. Nola hasn't given up six runs in a start since September 2nd, 2017.

Then things started to fall apart quickly, resulting in the team's first loss of the season, dropping them to 4-1.
