Madden 21 disrespects Carson Wentz

NFL fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Madden NFL 21 on August 25. In anticipation, ESPN is revealing player ratings and rankings for the leauge's best players at their positions. On Monday afternoon, ESPN released the Top 10 Quarterback ratings:

Wentz ranked tied for 9th with Cowboys QB Dak Prescott at an 84 overall. Questionably, Matt Ryan (87 overall) and a 42-year-old Tom Brady (90 overall) were ranked above Wentz, among others.

Here is what ESPN had to say about the Wentz ranking:

"Wentz took a two-point jump in the ratings and moved up three spots in the QB rankings to No. 10 after playing 16 games for the first time since his rookie season and throwing for over 4,000 yards for the first time in his career."

Prescott made a three-point jump from last year, rating out at an 81. In Madden 20, Wentz was the 13th highest rated player on the Eagles team. He ranked just behind Nelson Agholor, Ronald Darby and Alshon Jeffrey among others. The highest rating Wentz had in Madden was back in 2019 when he topped out at 85, which was 9th overall among quarterbacks.

Tom Brady dropped six points, the largest drop of his career, yet he still ranks ahead of Wentz despite a below-average 2019 season. Wentz, who lead the Eagles to the playoffs with a skeleton reciever core, rates the same as his Cowboys counterpart Dak Prescott, who failed to make the playoffs. Watson also ranks ahead of Wentz despite Wentz throwing for over 4,000 yards last season. The 84 rating seems on the low end for a quarterback who put up similar numbers to his peers while working with significantly less around him. Other quarterbacks that were rated an 84 before the season started include: Ben Rothlisberger, Alex Smith, Matthrew Stafford in 2019; Andy Dalton and Phillip Rivers in 2018; Joe Flacco in 2017.

Patrick Mahomes, who recently signed a record-breaking 12-year, $477 million deal, is one of four players rated 99 overall in the game according to several source who leaked the rankings. The other three include the Rams' Aaron Donald, the Pats' Stephon Gilmore, and the Panthers' Christian McCaffrey. A 99 rating is the highest rating a player can get in Madden.

EA Sports also released ratings for the 2020 rookie class's offensive skill players last week. Eagles rookie wide reciever Jalen Reagor was rated a 73, the fifth best wide reciever rating of the rookie class. Notably, Reagor is one point behind Justin Jefferson, who the Eagles chose not to selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Eagles second round selection, quarterback Jalen Hurts, has a 68 overall rating, which is fifth best among rookie quarterbacks behind Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Jordan Love and Justin Herbet.
