Eagles move on from two assistant coaches

Two prominent Eagles assistant coaches will not be back in 2019.

According to a league source, both defensive line coach Chris Wilson and wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer will not be back next season. The news was first reporter by Eagles reporters and Go Birds podcasters Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan.

Wilson's contract expired at the end of the season and will not be renewed. Brewer has been told he can pursue other opportunities.

The decision not to bring back Brewer is not surprising. None of the young receivers on the roster showed signs of improvement during his only year on the the job. Receiver Shelton Gibson, who was expected to play a bigger role this season, spent most of the year on the bench. Brewer's history with receiver Mack Hollins ended up not playing a factor this season, as Hollins spend the entire season on injured reserve.

The departure of Brewer means that the Eagles will now be on their fourth receivers coach in four seasons, with Greg Lewis and Mike Groh previously holding the title.

What is surprising is that Wilson will not be back.

Wilson has been by all accounts an excellent coach during his time in Philadelphia, leading one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. The immediate impact that rookie Derek Barnett made during the 2017 season was in part because of Wilson's coaching. Wilson should also be given credit for the improved play of defensive tackle Fletcher Cox.

With both coaches now gone, the Eagles will begin the process of trying to find their replacements.
