NFL Draft: Will Eagles trade up for Montez Sweat?

Early on in this years NFL Draft process, plenty of mock drafts had Mississippi State defensive end Montez Sweat falling to the Eagles at No. 25 overall.

The chances of that happening might have ended on Sunday.

Sweat turned in one of the best performances ever for a defensive end in the 40-yard dash on Sunday, running it ins a blistering 4.42 seconds despite standing 6-foot-6, 260 pounds.

To put into perspective just how fast Sweat ran, here are the 40-times for some well-known receivers:

Amari Cooper 4.42 seconds

Julio Jones 4.42 seconds

Odell Beckham Jr. 4.43 seconds

A.J. Green 4.49 seconds

Michael Thomas 4.57 seconds

Antonio Brown 4.57 seconds

Sweat already went into the Combine as one of the top defensive ends in the NFL Draft, coming off a college career where he finished with 23.5 sacks, 30.5 tackles for a loss and 105 total tackles. Sweat totaled back-to-back 10-plus sack seasons in his final two years, totaling 22.5 sacks in his last 26 games.

The good news is the Eagles have the ammunition to move up for Sweat if needed. Currently, the Eagles have No. 25, No. 53 and No. 57. According to the NFL Draft pick value chart, the chart used by teams when proposing trades, those points hold a total of 1,420 points. That would in theory get the Eagles as high as No. 8 overall, which has a value of 1,400 points.

The chances of the Eagles having to go into the top 10 for Sweat are slim, and the chances of Roseman doing it are even slimmer. A spot to keep an eye on for Sweat might be No. 13 overall. That pick is owed by the Miami Dolphins, a team the Eagles have pulled off two major trades with over the last three seasons. The No. 13 overall pick is 1,150 points. The value of No. 25 and No. 53 come out to 1,090 points — just 60 points shy. If Sweat is on the board at No. 13 overall, and the Eagles are as high on him as they should be, a deal could be pulled off.

Giving up two of their first three picks for Sweat might sound like a kings ransom, but the Eagles' need along the defensive line is real. They have less of a need for an immediate impact player after Brandon Graham agreed to a three-year extension last Friday, but the unit is still one of the oldest on the teams. The Eagles desperately need a young, elite defensive end prospect to pair with Derek Barnett.

Sweat certainly checks off all the boxes the Eagles will look for in a defensive end prospect, which is why the idea of Roseman pulling off a trade to move up for Sweat shouldn't be ruled out.
