The Phillies have signed shortstop Didi Gregorius to a one-year deal, a move they have been persuing for some time.
News of the deal comes via a report by Joel Sherman of the New York Post, and has since been confirmed by multiple outlets. His deal with the Phillies is reportedly for $14 million, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Gregorius, 29, spent the last five seasons in New York and played for new Phillies manager Joe Girardi from 2015-2017. Gregorius is a career .264 hitter averaging 21 homers and 79 RBIs over his eight year career. Gregorius was at one point one of the best shortstops in baseball, as he was top five in WAR from 2017 to 2018.
Gregorius taking a one-year deal is surprising, but it is clear he is hoping to come to Philadelphia, build up his value and cash in next offseason on a multi-year deal. He missed a portion of last season due to Tommy John surgery, but he is presumably healthy and ready to go.
The decision to bring in Gregorius means that Jean Segura will likely be moving to second base, assuming they don't trade him this offseason.
The Phillies have yet to confirm the move.
