Report: Eagles trying to trade Rasul Douglas

The makeover in the Eagles cornerback room is in full swing.

According to a report from Pro Football Talk the Eagles are shopping cornerback Rasul Douglas. The report is not surprising considering the team just acquired cornerback Darius Slay and the high probability they draft a cornerback high in the 2020 NFL Draft. Trading Douglas would save the team around $2 million in cap space.

With all of the changes it is unlikely both Douglas and Sidney Jones will be on the roster next season. If the Eagles have to move on from one, the apparent decision to move on from Douglas is not surprising.

There will likely be more teams interested in Douglas than Jones, and he will likely net more in return in a trade. Douglas has played more than Jones has and has shown he can be a quality starting cornerback when he is given the chance. Douglas is a physical player that is great around the ball and knows how to make plays when they come his way, coming away with five interceptions in just three seasons despite limited playing time.

One issue with trading Douglas, however, is that he is also a more valuable part of the roster than Jones. Douglas has been the team's go-to starter on the outside when they have had injuries at cornerback and if he isn't on the roster next season they will need to find a high-level backup to replace him.

Douglas, however, might welcome a trade. The Eagles have never given him a fair shot at a starting job despite him stepping in multiple times and playing well in a starting role. Instead, cornerbacks like Ronald Darby have been handed the job. If a team is trading for Douglas they will presumably give him a fair chance at a starting job -- something he hasn't gotten in Philadelphia.
