We have our first surprise cut of training camp as the Green Bay Packers have reportedly let go of defensive linemen Mike Daniels. As will be the case throughout training camp and throughout the season, the Eagles will do their homework on every player that becomes available and decide if they should bring him in.
Is Daniels a player the Eagles could have interest in?
Daniels is certainly a player that would improve the team's depth. At 30-years old, Daniels was a Pro Bowl player in 2017 before suffering a season-ending foot injury in 2018. He was placed on injured reserve in December and didn't return, but totaled 18 tackles, two sacks and one tackle for a loss before suffering his injury. He has 29-career sacks in 102 games in the NFL, however, a very solid track record of production.
The Eagles do not have a huge need for Daniels, as their starting defensive line is set, but he would be a major boost to their depth. Daniels ability to play both defensive tackle or defensive end is also likely to be appealing to the coaching staff, which values versatility among their defensive linemen.
The team's depth at defensive tackle is solid, but Daniels is a proven player that would be prepared to step in and play a starter role if needed. The same can't be said for some of the team's depth at defensive tackle — Hasaan Ridgeway, Bruce Hector or Treyvon Hester. There is also the health concerns surrounding starting defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, who is recovering from offseason foot surgery.
The same can be said at defensive end, as the Eagles have two solid starters in Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett, but their depth at the position is filled with questions. Josh Sweat has potential, but has yet to get consistent playing time in the NFL. Vinny Curry is coming off of a down season in Tampa Bay.
Daniels reportedly wants to go to a team where he can compete for a Super Bowl. That should put the Eagles on his radar, and the Eagles — who are all in on trying to win this season and have an open roster spot — would be wise to explore adding Daniels to their defensive line.
