Leading up to this season, and throughout the year, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman passed up the chance to sign or trade for a number of elite players.
It looks like he'll have a chance once again this offseason to fill a major need on the team with an elite player — the question is whether he will do it.
Speaking Sunday morning on FOX, NFL Insider Jay Glazer reported that Cleveland Browns receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is telling players and coaches around the league he wants to be traded, and that it very well could happen this offseason.
"Throughout this year, Odell Beckham has told other players and coaches before games 'Come get me, come get me out of here'," Glazer said. "Remember, it was to Odell's choice to go to the Cleveland Browns. He got traded there, so there are reports he needs sports hernia surgery — I have to say, I don't see that relationship ending well for them after this year."
It was Glazer who predicted last season that Beckham would be traded from the Giants, a move that to the surprise of many did happen.
If Beckham is once again moved this offseason, the Eagles should certainly have some interest.
Beckham's contract is extremely team friendly, as he holds cap hits of $14 million the next two seasons, and then the hit drops to $13.75 million from 2022 to 2023. The Giants have all the dead money on their books, so whatever team lands Beckham would just pay his base salary (the $14 million). Beckham has no more guaranteed money in his contract.
The Eagles, of course, have a major need at wide receiver and will have to make multiple moves this offseason to fix the position. Despite having a down year this season, Beckham Jr. is still one of the elite receivers in the NFL, and considerably better than any receiver the Eagles have right now. Roseman has been reluctant to pull off big trades recently, but he has shown he is a general manager that is always looking to win it all each season, and doesn't really build with the future in mind. Landing Beckham, and sending out a draft pick to get him, would certainly fit that bill.
Although the Eagles would have to eat some of the money, including Alshon Jeffery — a player the Eagles will likely try to move on from this season — could make some sense, as it would give the Browns back a quality veteran receiver to replace Beckham with.
What ends up happening with Beckham, and how interested the Eagles will be, remains to be seen — but it seems like they will at least have a chance to make an offer to the Browns for him this offseason.
