Segura under fire for lack of hustle (again)

For the second time in less than a month, Phillies infielder Jean Segura is catching heat for not hustling out of the batter's box.

The play came in the first inning on Wednesday night against the Washington Nationals. Segura jogged after making contact the ball, and seemed to think it was going to be caught, only to watch it drop for a hit in the outfield. Had Segura been running at full speed out of the box he likely would have been on second with a double and only one out.

Here is a look at the play:

After the game, Kapler acknowledged the play was unacceptable and that he spoke to Segura about it. It is unclear if Segura will be benched.

As mentioned above, this isn't the first time Segura has showed less-than-ideal effort out of the batter's box. Earlier this month he was involved in a controversy surrounding the injury to Andrew McCutchen. Some believe that had Segura hustled out of the batter's box the injury to McCutchen, who was caught between first-and-second, wouldn't have happened. Segura was not benched for the play.

The play lead to a heated debate between Phillies manager Gabe Kapler and 94WIP morning host Angelo Cataldi after Kapler refused to place blame on Segura for McCutchen's injury.

Cataldi: "You're not even acknowledging that him not running led to the injury to McCutchen. You honestly don't see one and one equaling two?"

Kapler: "I absolutely do not see one and one equaling two."

Cataldi: "Wow, that's amazing."

Kapler: "What I see happened, like I said, Cutch stumbled out of the box. He didn't have his feet under him. Once he got his balance, he wasn't able to run as hard as he usually does. He acknowledged that and talking about acknowledgement, I'm acknowledging that. He can do a better job running out of the batter's box. Also acknowledging that our center fielder at the time, our leadoff hitter, got hurt in a major way. I'm saying that's not Segura's fault and to say that is absolutely irresponsible."

After Wednesday night, Cataldi is once again waiting for Kapler to hold Segura responsible for his lack of hustle.

If Gabe Kapler doesn't bench Jean Segura tonight, the manager should be fired. Kapler repeatedly allows offenders to escape without punishment. He is losing the team. Segura cost the Phils Andrew McCutchen, and he dogged it again last night. It's your move, Gabe. Now or never.

The Phillies are scheduled to play the Washington Nationals on Thursday night. Whether Segura will be in the lineup remains to be seen.
