Howie Roseman admitted earlier this month on 94WIP that the Eagles are fully committed to Carson Wentz and are "planning" to sign him to a long-term extension.
CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin is reporting that a league source tells him that deal will "probably be finalized this summer," and will be worth approximately $30 million per season.
"Wentz will be north of Kirk Cousins but south of Russell Wilson on an average-per-year basis," the source said per CBSSports.com.
Cousins signed a three-year deal worth $84 million with the Vikings last season, good for $28 million per season. Wilson recently signed a four-year deal worth $140 million, $35 million per season.
Wentz, who turns 27 in December, is currently set to make $8.4 million in 2019. He has a 2020 fifth-year option for $22.78 million.
"This is something that we are planning to do and if the deal is right for us, and the deal is right for Carson, we wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on that," Roseman told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show on May 7th. "That's just the amount of confidence we have and we want to build this team knowing kind of what that piece is in place and go forward."
Earlier this offseason, Wentz received criticism in an article labeling him "selfish and uncomprosmising." However, Wentz has since responded admitting, "I realize like I maybe wasn't the greatest teammate at times because I was emotionally kind of all over the place." Wentz's teammates have come to his defense throughout the offseason. Most recently, Brandon Brooks backed his quarterback on 94WIP's Zero Fs Given Podcast, calling the article a "lie."
In three NFL seasons, Wentz has started 40 out of 48 games, completing 63.7-percent of his passes, with 70 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. Wentz's best season was 2017, when he threw for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions in just 13 games before tearing his ACL against the Rams.
Wentz is currently still rehabbing from a back injury that kept him out of last season's playoff run. Doug Pederson, who says Wentz is progressing, would not say whether or not he'll be ready for OTAs this month.
