Hamels, now in his second season with the Cubs, still does charitable work in the Philadelphia area with The Hamels Foundation and credits Montgomery for relaying the importance of charity to him. When Montgomery passed away earlier this month, needless to say, Hamels was affected.
According to NBCSportsPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury, Hamels reached out to the Phillies communications department for a DPM (David Paul Montgomery) jersey patch, which is expected to be delivered to Hamels by the end of the series on Thursday.
The 35-year-old lefty faced the Phillies for the first time on Wednesday night, allowing nine hits and three runs in 4.0 innings of a Cubs 8-4 win. Hamels, who won the 2008 World Series and World Series MVP with the Phillies, had not faced the Phils in his career until Wednesday.
"Not necessarily just because it's been so long and the team has kind of changed over," Hamels said when asked if it was weird pitching against his former club. "I think if it was probably a game, probably would have had a different sort of feel."
