Pederson 'expects' Sudfeld to be backup, Hurts QB3

When the Eagles shocked the sports world and selected Jalen Hurts with their second-round pick in this year's draft, many wondered what that meant for Carson Wentz.

At least for now, it certainly doesn't seem like it will affect much for Wentz.

Speaking virtually on Tuesday morning, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson says he doesn't even expect Hurts to be the backup QB to start the 2020 season, in large part due to the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, which could slow down the league's timeline.

"Early on in this season it becomes a veteran laden football season, football teams are going to have to rely on their veteran players and Nate (Sudfeld) is one of those guys for us," Pederson said. "He's been on our roster the last couple of seasons and he knows exactly what we're doing and I have a ton of confidence in Nate to become the backup quarterback. Nothing is ever handed to anybody and we always try to create competition at every position and quarterback, as you guys knows, is not exempt from that.

"But I fully expect Nate to come in and be aggressive and do the things that he's capable of doing and become the backup to Carson (Wentz). And with Jalen (Hurts), Jalen is about right now just learning and picking up our system. He's another one, another young player that we drafted and there's a lot to learn from the quarterback position. Are we going to take it a little bit slower maybe with him until he grasps the offense? You might have to."

Sudfeld, originally a sixth-round pick of the Redskins in 2016, was waived by Washington before the start of the 2017 and was signed to the Eagles' practice squad. He's played in just three games over the last two seasons, completing 20 of 25 passes for 156 yards, 1 TD, and 0 INT.

Last month, Hurts joined the 94WIP Morning Show and said he's excited to work with Wentz.

There were be plenty of storylines to follow surrounding the Eagles' QB room in 2020.
