Former Temple football head coach Matt Rhule is "promiment" in the New York Giants' search for a new coach, according to Chris Mortensen. This news comes just minutes after the Giants fired head coach Pat Shurmur.
Rhule, 44, served as an assistant under Tom Coughlin for the Giants in 2012. Rhule was also born in New York before moving to State College and eventually playing linebacker for Penn State, which is also the alma mater of the Giants' star running back Saquon Barkley.
Rhule took over as the head coach of Baylor in 2017 and went 11-2 this season, helping turn the program around. At Temple, Rhule went 28-23 and 14-2 in his final two seasons.
The Giants are obviously an attractive destination for Rhule with so many offensive weapons in place, including a young QB in Daniel Jones and cap space.
Giants GM Dave Gettleman has drafted QB of future in Daniel Jones, a year after landing an elite RB in Saquon Barkley. Cap is in good shape. Attractive job for Rhule and other candidates.
