Banner: Slay's deal 'exceptional value' for Eagles

Former Eagles president Joe Banner is one of the most savvy and vocal analysts on the NFL salary cap out there.

On Thursday, Banner joined the 94WIP Marks & Reese Show to talk about the Eagles' recent free-agency moves, most notable their trade for Darius Slay where Philadelphia sent third and fifth-round picks to Detroit for the Pro Bowl cornerback.

"Slay to me is a no brainer," Banner said. "You may think he's a very good player, or an elite player, but he's in that range no matter who you talk to. Frankly, the corner market has been depressed and they were actually able to get him based on old numbers and 16 games. So I think the value of the trade is very strong and I think the contract is excellent. To me, that's all you can ask for. That's a really good move."

The Eagles also re-signed Slay to a three-year, $50 million extension that includes $30 million guaranteed, an "exceptional value," according to Banner.

"A third round pick has about a 20-25 percent chance of producing even a solid starter," Banner told Jon Marks and Ike Reese. "So if you give up a third round pick and you get something you know his a quality starter, somebody you know is a high quality starter, I mean that's pretty great value.

"(Patrick Peterson's) current contract just upgraded from inflation of the cap is $21 a year. So, if you're signing a top corner today for under 17 (million) that's just exceptional value. I'm honestly not sure why the player or the agent were comfortable with that deal, even if they were anxious to get out of Detroit."

Banner also talked about the Eagles letting Malcolm Jenkins walk, a move he was a little more skeptical of.
