On Monday's 94WIP Morning Show, former Sixers coach Larry Brown remembered Bryant.
"He was a Philly kid," the Hall Of Fame coach said of Bryant, who went to Lower Merion high school. "Every time he came back to Philadelphia it was like, incredible. It's just—I don't know what to think."
"I always tell (my players) talent is a gift from God, but character is a choice," Brown continued. "Nobody worked harder than this guy, than Kobe."
Brown, while coaching the Sixers, faced Bryant and the Lakers in the 2001 NBA Finals.
"We were banged up," Brown remembered. "The only way you can play against the Lakers then, in my mind, was if you had great perimeter defense and depth. And then you had fouls to give at center to guard Shaq.
"We used to have our players talk about who they were gonna guard and most of them would say they didn't want to be embarrassed by Kobe and they needed help," he continued. "Because you couldn't guard him one on one."
Bryant, just 41 years old, had so much left to do in his lifetime.
"To me the biggest thing is we lost somebody who was going to do something after he was done playing," Brown said. "And so many of these young kids need to see people like that and realize what they can make of their lives."
