Former Cowboys great WR Michael Irvin says it's important for the quarterback to be the heart and soul of a football team, and that's why he'd give the edge to Dak Prescott over Carson Wentz. Prescott, according to Irvin, has complete control of his locker room and has earned respect from both the white and black players.
"And I do like both of those quarterbacks," Irving told Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie on Thursday's 94WIP Midday Show when asked about Prescott vs. Wentz.
"Dak has way more wins right now, I was studying that the other day, than Carson Wentz. And I love Dak, I love Dak Prescott. I love him for what he does on the football field, but even more than that his leadership. The team loves playing for him, not even mentioning that he's a mixture of two races and it's a subliminal of what good comes from races mixing together. I love that about Dak. And both respond to him in that locker room, the black athletes, the white athletes. Both respond to him well.
"This is what makes New England so hard to beat and it's what made them so great, is that Tom Brady is the heart and soul of a football team. When we played and won Super Bowls—had to put that in, won Super Bowls—I was the heart and soul of the football team. When you can get the quarterback to be the heart and soul of a football team, you've got a great thing because you have all of the guys wanting to play for the leader of the team, the position that's justified as the leader."
Last offseason, some reports circulated about the Eagles' locker room being divided between Wentz and Eagles Super Bowl champion winning QB Nick Foles.
"Now, I've heard rumblings that that's not the situation with Carson Wentz when Nick Foles was there and I think that hurts the quarterback, if that is the perception in the locker room," said Irvin.
Wentz is 2-4 in his career vs. Prescott and the Cowboys with 11 touchdowns and two interceptions. Prescott is 5-2 vs. Philadelphia, but has just eight touchdowns to seven interceptions in those seven games. Having said that, Prescott is amid the best season of his career, with 4,334 yards, 26 TDs, and 11 INTs. Wentz is quietly having a big year as well throwing for 3,431 yards, 25 TDs, and 7 INTs.
On Sunday, both 7-7 teams will meet at the Linc with control of the NFC East and looming playoff berth seemingly on the line.
