Report: Phillies' Young out as pitching coach

Phillies pitching coach Chris Young
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

There's still no word on the job status of Phillies manager Gabe Kapler or general manager Matt Klentak, but according to Todd Zolecki, the team is not bringing back pitching coach Chris Young for the 2020 season. Well, at least for the pitching coach position, that is.

According to Zolecki, "A source said (Young) has been offered an opportunity to remain. Other coaches on manager Gabe Kapler's staff have been told they will return in 2020, but it is unclear who and how many."

Matt Breen expanded on Zolecki's report, stating that a source tells him that Klentak's status for 2020 was "never in question."

Can confirm @ToddZolecki's report that Chris Young will not return in 2020 as Phillies pitching coach. A decision on Gabe Kapler is expected next week, but a source said that general manager Matt Klentak's status for 2020 was never in question.

Kapler, 44, is 161-163 in two seasons as Phillies manager, but the team drastically underachieved this season after acquiring Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto, and others. However, key injuries did derail the team.

A decision on Kapler's job status is expected next week.

Klentak, 39, was named Phillies GM on October 26th, 2015. This offseason, he was praised for bringing in Harper, Realmuto, Andrew McCutchen, Jean Segura, and David Robertson. However, after a .500 season, Klentak received plenty of criticism.
