MLB.com's Todd Zolecki joined Joe Giglio on Monday evening to discuss the Phillies' interest in Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, following the team's positive meeting with Harper on Saturday.
"I know that the meeting Saturday went well," Zolecki said. "I know that the Phillies were very, very impressed by Bryce Harper and his wife Kayla, so much so that Harper might become the priority now over Manny Machado."
"(Machado) had been the number one choice because of his combination of offense, which is great," Zolecki said. "But also the fact that if he plays third base, which he would for the Phillies, he's a gold glove third basemen. I think the Phillies were a little bit scared off by (Harper's) defense. If you look at his defensive metrics last year, he had a really bad year defensive in the outfield, Bryce Harper. I'm sure they talked with Bryce about it, maybe they got some good answers there."
Is there any chance the Phillies sign both Harper and Machado?
"It's going to be does Phillies ownership want to do this deal," Zolecki said. "If Phillies ownership would want to put up the extra money to maybe get both of these guys, it's going to be their call. It's definitely going to be their call. I would still bet against it, though."
