The Phillies have added free-agent left-handed starting pitcher Drew Smyly, according to Jon Heyman.
Smyly, 30, was traded from the Cubs to the Rangers this Winter, before being released by Texas on June 25th. Smyly then signed a minor league deal with the Brewers on July 1st and became a free-agent yesterday.
Smyly was 1-5 in 2019 with the Rangers with an 8.42 ERA in nine starts. For his career, Smyly has a 4.13 ERA in 94 starts with a 4.17 FIP and a 1.258 WHIP.
Smyly will give the Phillies some much needed depth to their starting rotation as they head down the stretch of the 2019 regular season, hoping for a playoff berth.
94WIP's Joe Giglio, James Seltzer, and Howard Eskin reacted to the news on Twitter.
Drew Smyly (8.42 ERA, not good since 2015, couldn't make the bigs with a Brewers team desperate for pitching help) is a sad upgrade. But he's an upgrade.
— Joe Giglio (@JoeGiglioSports) July 19, 2019No downside and Smyly has had success in the past prior to injuries. Exact type of flyer the Phillies should be taking.
— James Seltzer (@JamesSeltzer) July 19, 2019The #phillies get a lefty starter but not exactly the one they need. His numbers in minors before being released by #Brewers not very good , but Drew Smyly can't hurt. @SportsRadioWIP https://t.co/k8TASF0xdq
