Report: Phillies interested in super-utility player

Looks like the Phillies are still active in the free agent market. The team reportedly has shown interest in super-utility man Marwin Gonzalez according to sources.

Last season, Gonzalez made $9 million with the Minnesota Twins and hit .211 with five home runs and 22 RBIs over a 53 game span.

Gonzalez is best known for his time as a Houston Astro, where he won a World Series with the club in 2017. Gonzalez erupted offensively that year, posting career highs in every offensive category. However, his performance has come into question after the Astros sign-stealing scandal surfaced, where players were communicating pitches to hitters by banging on a trash can. Data shows Gonzalez benefited the most from this. It's unclear how much this helped Gonzalez, but the system was used most often when Gonzalez was at the plate.

Since then, his offensive performance has regressed noticeably, posting a sub-.800 OPS in the last three seasons, two of which were spent with the Minnesota Twins.

Gonzalez's defense is very valuable, however. The 32-year-old has totaled more than 100 games played in his career at every position except right field and center field. Despite the recent signings of J.T. Realmuto and Didi Gregorius, the Phillies are a below-average defensive team that could benefit from a glove like Gonzalez. The switch-hitter also has hit with power throughout his career.
