If a picture is worth 1,000 words, then a meme is worth 10,000.
After the Philadelphia 76ers reportedly completed a trade that will allow them to acquire James Harden in a deal that sends Ben Simmons to Brooklyn as the headliner of a larger package, Sixers' superstar Joel Embiid posted this to Twitter:
For those unaware, the wonderful publication "Know Your Meme" reminds us that this meme -- known as "RIPBOZO" -- came from an Instragram user named "@BigFend." The caption under the post from May of 2015 was "I Stopped By One Of My Biggest Haters Funeral Today 🙏 Just To Make Sure That [explicit] Was Dead 😏#RipBozo #DieHatersDie"
So what were Embiid's intentions in sharing this meme?
On one hand, the Sixers just acquired a future Hall of Famer in Harden to pair with Embiid, whose career is on a similar trajectory. Pairing those two together could potentially allow the Sixers to win their first championship since 1982-83. Perhaps in tweeting this, his message was something to the effect of "just came to make sure Harden is coming to Philadelphia, which will kill the chances of the rest of the league to win championships for a while."
Then again, Embiid has spent this entire season having to answer questions about why Simmons no longer wants to be in Philadelphia, distracting the team from reaching their full potential on the court. He's probably not unhappy to see Simmons traded, especially to a team that the Sixers could ultimately face in the playoffs. At the very least, he won't be asked about Simmons very frequently moving forward.
Maybe, it's a bit of both. That's the beauty of art, different people can look at the same meme and have different interpretations.
