Aaron Rodgers won't be leaving the Green Bay Packers -- not now, and perhaps not ever.
After Pat McAfee reported that the four-time NFL MVP was going to return to the Packers in 2022, NFL Media's Ian Rapoport broke the news that Rodgers has agreed to one of the most lucrative contracts in the history of professional sports:
However, Rodgers said Tuesday afternoon that while he is returning to the Packers, he hasn't signed any new contract:
Rapoport says that Rodgers, 38, did consider the possibility of being traded to the Denver Broncos or even retiring after 17 seasons. Ultimately, though, Rodgers will return to chase his second Super Bowl title.
If Rodgers is able to sign a new deal and lower his 2022 cap number, he could help to create the necessary salary cap space for the team to franchise tag wide receiver Davante Adams. Adams has been an All-Pro in back-to-back years, and has 8,121 receiving yards and 73 touchdown catches in eight seasons with the Packers.
Any new deal would essentially mean that Jordan Love -- selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, seemingly with the thought that he would one day succeed Rodgers -- won't ever be the starter for the Packers. Rich Eisen even said last week that the Packers "know he ain't the guy," in regards to Love.
