Charles Johnson, former Eagles WR, dead at 50

Former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Charles Johnson died at the age of 50, the University of Colorado, Johnson’ alma mater, confirmed on Wednesday.

The cause of Johnson’s death remains unknown. He was found by Raleigh Police at a hotel about 20 minutes from Wake Forest, where he worked as an assistant athletic director for Heritage High School.

Johnson was a star at the University of Colorado he posted back-to-back seasons of more than 1,000 receiving yards, with five touchdowns his junior year and nine his senior season.

He was drafted in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1994, spending five years with Pittsburgh, including his career-best season in 1996 when he had 60 catches for 1,008 yards and three touchdowns.

Johnson then spent two seasons with the Eagles before he joined the New England Patriots in 2001 where he won a Super Bowl with the team. He appeared in the AFC Championship Game against the Steelers, catching two passes on three targets for 22 yards in a 24-17 victory.

Johnson played the following season with the Buffalo Bills before retiring after a nine-year career. He had 354 career receptions and 24 career touchdowns.
