Seth Joyner on Darius Slay: 'Time to let young cornerbacks play'
Seth Joyner says it is time for the Philadelphia Eagles to go younger at cornerback and go away from veteran 33-year-old All-Pro Darius Slay.
"When I look at Slay, he wants no part of contact unless he can push a guy out of bounds or trip him up," Joyner said on Wednesday's 94WIP Midday Show with Hugh Douglas and Joe Giglio. "This is my opinion, I think the Eagles—it's time. Because it's obvious to everybody that this is his last hurrah in Philadelphia. I believe that you've got some really good young cornerbacks and you need to play them."
Joyner was asked about Slay's controversial decision to go on a podcast with Dallas Cowboys defensive end Micah Parsons and discuss Parsons' beef with Slay's teammate C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
"People want to know what I think about this and the only response I had [on X] was, 'I have no words for this.' Guess who liked it and he don't ever say nothing on Twitter [X]?" Joyner said. "Brian Dawkins...The first person to like it.
"Darius Slay is at the end of the road...All of this bravado, I have no words for the Cowboy thing. That speaks for itself. That's just cardinal sin, you don't do that kind of stuff. As far as his play on the field is concerned, hey listen if you ask him to play passively—what Vic Fangio is doing—he can do that. But we need guys to play aggressively."
Through four games, Slay has allowed the third highest passer rating in the NFL to opposing quarterbacks. He has two passes defended, one forced fumble, and 19 tackles this season.
This season, Slay has a base salary of $1,210,000 and a signing bonus of $10,140,000, while carrying a cap hit of $10,651,483, per Spotrac.com.
