Doug Pederson revealed on Monday that 38-year-old future Hall Of Fame left tackle Jason Peters walked into his office and said he would be willing to move back to his natural position of left tackle from right guard, to help the Eagles with their injury problems on the offensive line.
Pederson expanded on that situation on Tuesday's 94WIP Morning Show with Angelo Cataldi.
"No, we were comfortable at right guard," Pederson said when asked if he would have forced Peters to play left tackle if he did not want to.
"I know it's probably a sensitive or touchy subject with a lot of people, but in this business you can win and lose games by putting players or coaches in positions where they don't feel comfortable doing. It's just part of athletes, it's part of coaches. If I asked you to do something outside of your norm, you've been training a certain way and now I'm going to ask you to do something differently, it's hard.
"Again, we've talked about changing two different position groups with the offensive line. I think it's different with Jason Peters. Jason Peters is a Hall Of Fame left tackle, but however, we brought him back to play right guard for Brandon Brooks. For him to come into my office -- he and I looked each other in the eye, for him to say, 'Hey, I want to slide over. It's best for the team, it's best for us, helps us win games, whatever that looks like,' was the right decision. And I'm not gonna force a player to do something maybe they're not comfortable at the time, it just doesn't make sense."
Peters' decision comes after a week of debate on whether the Eagles should pay Peters more money to move to left tackle, as he reportedly wanted, or keep him at right guard.
According to an NFL Network report, Peters did not have his deal re-done to make the move.
