The Eagles selected DT Marlon Tuipulotu on Saturday afternoon with their 6th round pick, 189th overall.
Height/Weight: 6-2, 307 (pronounced TOO-ee-poo-LOE-too)
College Stats: 49 games played, 104 total tackles, 2 forced fumbles for USC
Analysis: Tuipulotu's game is not yet ready for the big stage, although he impressed with his Senior Bowl performance. His track record at USC is solid and he brings good size to the line. He could bring some versatility on the inside for the Eagles and his skill set definitely translates to the NFL. He will be a project as the Eagles look to bulk their line with some young talent behind Javon Hargrave.
Scouting Reports:
Thick, burly frame…hard player to move due to his base power…above-average play strength to bully blockers on their heels…skilled with his two-hand strike or violent push-pull to jolt and disengage…flashes a quality pass rush with his snap quickness, foot agility and swipe moves…keeps his hands and feet in unison to stay on schedule versus both the pass and the run. Doesn't have an explosive first step to win with quickness alone…needs to keep his pads low out of his stance…has some stiffness in his lower body and hips, hindering his ability to abruptly change directions…doesn't make many plays from the backside…can be more gap sound…didn't show many counter options as a pass rusher on tape.
Tuipulotu's career at USC started with an injury-filled freshman season (sprained left knee, back) in which he redshirted despite playing three games (two tackles, one start). The next year, he started 10 of 12 games (33 stops, 5.5 for loss, with 4.5 sacks). He came into his own for the Trojans as a redshirt sophomore, starting 12 games and making 46 tackles, six for loss, with two sacks and three pass breakups. He carried that momentum into 2020, garnering first-team All-Pac-12 honors (23 tackles, 3.5 for loss, with two sacks in six starts) and accepting an invitation to the Senior Bowl.
Three-year starter who missed most of his freshman season with a back injury. Possesses great first-step quickness, consistently gets leverage on opponents, and works his hands throughout the action. Athletic, rarely off his feet and fluid moving in any direction.
Possesses a closing burst and shows the ability to make plays in space, even when dropped off the line. Plays with balance as well as body control.
