The Eagles have given tight end Dallas Goedert a contract extension, locking him up through the 2025 season.
The deal means Goedert, who is in the final year of his contract, won't be hitting the free agency market and is now one of the cornerstones of the franchise.
Here are some thoughts on the decision:
*** This is in someways a no-brainer for the Eagles. Goedert is one of the best young players they have on either side of the ball. Locking him up ensures they will have one of the top playmaking tight ends in the league to count on in their offense for the foreseeable future. The money doesn't really matter when it comes to this deal — locking Goedert up was the important part, and they can always renegotiate the deal down the line to lower the cap hits if needed.
*** Of course, one way the money does matter is Goedert continuing to produce at a high level. He has shown signs of being able to do just that this season, totaling 185 yards in the three games prior to being knocked out against Denver. Goedert has limited experience being TE1, something he didn't have to be when Zach Ertz was here. Now, he will be expected to produce at a high level each week — just like he is being paid to do.
*** Howie Roseman's draft record is certainly not great, but there is no question Goedert was a great pick. Landing him in the second round from a small school was great scouting by Roseman and his staff. Although he was a backup the first few seasons with Zach Ertz on the team, drafting and developing Goedert means they will now continue to have some of the top tight end play in the NFL.
*** From a team-building perspective, the Eagles are not that far off from being loaded with young talent on the offensive side of the ball. Goedert is one of the best in the league at his position. DeVonte Smith is on his way. Miles Sanders has shown he has a ton of potential. The offensive line has slowly been rebuilt into a young unit that has dominated the last few weeks. If Jalen Hurts can continue to develop, the Eagles remake on the offensive side of the ball will be completed sooner than most expected.
