The Eagles are signing 41-year old veteran quarterback Josh McCown to their practice squad, according to an ESPN report.
McCown was with the Eagles during the 2019 season, and ended up playing the majority of their playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks after starting quarterback Carson Wentz left the game with a concussion.
McCown is able to sign with the practice squad due to new league rules that removes the prior restrictions on who teams could sign. McCown will be eligible to be brought up to the active game-day roster from the practice squad twice this season.
McCown will earn $12,000 a week, totaling $204,000 if he is on the practice squad the entire 2020 season.
McCown coming back is certainly interesting. The report notes that McCown will remain in Texas, and won’t practice with the team, a sign that this is a move being made with COVID-19 — and the possibility of an outbreak — in mind.
McCown is expected to be in on virtual meetings all season, which should allow him to serve as a player-coach role as well.
It is also possible the Eagles simply don’t feel comfortable wither either Nate Sudfeld or Jalen Hurts taking over the starting job for an extended amount of time should Wentz go down, and would bring in McCown if that were to happen.
Either way, the Eagles now have an emergency quarterback under contract.
