Empire State Building will again light up in Eagles colors, and NYC politicians are furious

Many New Yorkers were outraged last month when the Empire State Building, the symbol of the Big Apple, lit up in green and white to honor the rival Eagles for winning the NFC Championship, just one week after dismantling the Giants in the divisional round.

Now, with the Super Bowl champion set to be given the same honor on Sunday night, New York City politicians made it clear that they wanted no part of Philly’s colors being back on the building, if the Birds were to take down the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

“Like many New Yorkers, we were dismayed in late January to see the Empire State Building lit up to honor the Philadelphia Eagles,” Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine and City Councilmember Keith Powers wrote in a letter shortly before the Super Bowl. “We have heard that this unfortunate incident is set to be repeated tonight as the Philadelphia Eagles play in Super Bowl LVII.

“New York City has an abundance of professional sports teams to honor. Surely we can refrain from boosting the most bitter rivals of those teams.”

It certainly will be repeated again on Sunday, as the Empire State Building’s Twitter account revealed that the skyscraper will flash in the colors of one team whenever it scores a touchdown, and will light up in the colors of the winner after the game.
