Former NFL QB: 'Carson Wentz makes dumb, avoidable mistakes'

Former Jets QB Glenn Foley went off on Carson Wentz

It's no secret Carson Wentz is struggling through his first three games of the 2020 season. And the critics have been loud over the past few weeks.

However, former New York Jets quarterback and Cherry Hill, NJ native Glenn Foley, may be the loudest of them all.

"The coaches are bad, it's not that hard I do it for a living," Foley told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show when asked about Wentz on Friday.

"He's a mess. He's not a natural thrower and so he has to work extra harder on his mechanics. He's not a guy that could go out there and be a pitcher if you will, he's more of a first basemen. He's gotta work extra hard on his mechanics and he's not doing it.And another thing, Doug is feeding into this. These two together are not real smart, we are missing some intelligence here with these two."

Foley says, specifically, the interception Wentz threw against Washington with a 17-0 lead is haunting him.

"The play that keeps creeping back into my head is when they are up 17-0 and Doug calls a comeback and Carson throws the interception and the Washington Football Team goes on to win that game," Foley said. "That throw is haunting me and the one talking about the wheel route. If he makes those two throws, or makes one for a touchdown, the Eagles have two wins."

Foley also talked about the loss of Frank Reich and the impact it has had on Wentz. Just this week, now Bears QB Nick Foles — who will face Reich this weekend — credited Reich with "figuring him out as a player."

"I'm the first one screaming when [Frank Reich] left was this is the biggest thing that is going to hurt Wentz," Foley said. "Now it's blatantly obvious. Frank was 90 percent of the intelligence. The Eagles could have two wins, but because of the lack of intelligence in the play calling and the quarterback—I call him [Wentz] the dumberjack. Everyone is like, what's his nickname? He's the lumberjack, but he is dumb, and he makes dumb mistakes. They are mistakes that are so avoidable. Doug compounds that by giving him gamble plays."

Wentz has 3 TDs, 6 INTs, and 1 losses fumbled in three games this season (0-2-1).
