DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - It appears that the Cowboys are finally ready to address their depth issues on the offensive line.
The Cowboys are bringing in veteran free agent and former Eagles offensive tackle Jason Peters for a visit on Thursday, Todd Archer of ESPN reports.
The news of Peter's visit comes the same day the team placed All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith on injured reserve with a hamstring injury that's expected to keep him out until December at the earliest.
Cowboys' 2022 first-round pick Tyler Smith, who is expected to step into the starting lineup at left tackle, began getting first-team reps at the position in Monday's practice.
"I'd like to defer on our starting lineup. But Tyler will definitely get a lot of work at left tackle," head coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday while declining to name Smith as the starter for Week 1.
Peters would likely be the swing tackle if he were to sign with Dallas. Although, that could always change if the rookie struggles at the outset of the season.
In a July interview with SiriusXM, Peters said he's not ready to hang up his cleats despite turning 40 in January. He went on to say that he's still working out to stay in playing shape while he waits for one final opportunity.
Peters, a six-time All-Pro and nine-time Pro Bowler, spent the first five seasons of his career with Buffalo after the Bills signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Arkansas in 2004. From there, he went on to stake his claim as one of the best offensive tackles in the NFL while playing for the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles up until 2020.
Peters started 15 games for the Chicago Bears in 2021, and according to Pro Football Focus, he was the 20th-ranked offensive tackle last season.
