5 players you forgot played for the Philadelphia Eagles

Frank Gore, the third-leading rusher in NFL history, nearly signed with the Philadelphia Eagles before the 2015 season.

Not like Gore and the Eagles had mutual interest and he went elsewhere, like Gore had verbally agreed to a contract to join the Eagles after a decade in San Francisco, only to "get cold feet" and ultimately agree to a three-year/$12 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts.

What caused Gore to change his mind?

Gore would later say that he wanted the chance to play with a great quarterback, and Andrew Luck, however brief his career was, played at an extremely high level. At the time of Gore's decision, it was fairly clear that the Eagles didn't employ a quarterback at that level, which prompted them to trade for Sam Bradford just days later.

Earlier that month, the Eagles had shockingly traded LeSean McCoy, the franchise's all-time leading rusher, to the Buffalo Bills. Though McCoy says he didn't talk Gore, a friend of his, out of signing in Philadelphia, there has long been a perception that Gore may have had second thoughts about playing for Chip Kelly after speaking to a disgruntled McCoy.

Whatever happened, Gore never suited up for the Eagles. Instead, his "time" in Philadelphia has become a running joke.

These five players did suit up for the Eagles, though their tenures in Philadelphia may have been even less memorable than that of Gore:

Eric Bieniemy

Because of his work as Kansas City Chiefs' offensive coordinator under Andy Reid, Bieniemy will almost certainly be a head coach in 2021. Bieniemy's relationship with Reid really began in 1999, when the veteran running back signed a one-year deal to join the Eagles. In Reid's first of 14 seasons as the Eagles head coach, Bieniemy largely was a non-factor, rushing for just 75 yards on 12 carries. Still, he seemingly left enough of an impression on Reid to ultimately join his coaching staff in Kansas City in 2013. The 1999 Eagles were full of future coaching stars, as Doug Pederson and Duce Staley were also on the roster.

Takeo Spikes

A few months before cutting fan-favorite Jeremiah Trotter, the Eagles acquired Spikes in a trade from the Buffalo Bills. Three years removed from being an All-Pro linebacker in Buffalo, Spikes did record 85 combined tackles and four pass deflections in what turned out to be his lone season in Philadelphia. After spending the 2007 season with the Eagles, Spikes caught on with the San Francisco 49ers for the 2008 campaign.

Steve Smith

Though he wasn't the most famous wide receiver in the NFL with his name, this Steve Smith did explode for 1,220 yards and a Pro Bowl appearance as a member of the New York Giants in 2009. Unfortunately for Smith, injuries derailed his career. After playing in 16 games in the 2008 and 2009 seasons, Smith was limited to just nine games in his final season with the Giants. Following the NFL's lockout in the summer of 2011, Smith caught on with the Eagles, inking a one-year/$2 million deal. Unfortunately, he again played in only nine games, for an Andy Reid-coached team that Vince Young infamously dubbed "The Dream Team." In his only campaign with the Eagles, Smith had just 11 catches for 124 yards. He would spend one more season in the NFL, playing for the St. Louis Rams in 2012.

Trent Edwards

Perhaps with the exception of Tyrod Taylor, quarterback play in Buffalo was pretty miserable in between Jim Kelly retiring after the 1996 season and Josh Allen being drafted in 2018. A third-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, Edwards was part of that group. Though he had more success as the Bills starter than, say, J.P. Losman, Edwards went 14-18 with more interceptions than touchdown passes in parts of four campaigns in Buffalo. After splitting the 2010 season with the Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars, Edwards wasn't on an NFL roster for the 2011 season. He landed back on his feet in 2012, serving as the third-string quarterback on a roster that also included Michael Vick and Nick Foles. For what it's worth, Edwards did complete all two of his pass attempts as an Eagle in what turned out to be his final NFL season.

Mike Wallace

Mike Wallace

Once upon a time, there was a fun debate among Pennsylvania football fans about whether Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson was faster than Pittsburgh Steelers wideout Mike Wallace. Unfortunately for Wallace, he didn't ultimately end up having the same amount of longevity as Jackson. Following three underwhelming seasons spent with a mix of the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings, Wallace revived his career with the Baltimore Ravens in 2016 and 2017. That fooled Howie Roseman and the defending Super Bowl Champion Eagles into believing Wallace could be a strong replacement for another former Raven, Torrey Smith. Instead, a fracture fibula essentially turned Wallace's final NFL season into a wash, as he played in just two games and had zero receptions. Ironically, the Eagles reacquired Jackson after the failed experiment with Wallace in 2018.
