Roseman 'can't wait' to see Mills at safety

Howie Roseman talks Eagles 2020 roster on 94WIP

The Philadelphia Eagles are entering the 2020 season banged up on both sides of ball, causing some trepidation about the team's playoff chances.

Howie Roseman did not hold back on Tuesday morning, firing up Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show, and everyone listening.

"We don't build a team to sit home in January," Roseman said when asked if the Eagles are a playoff team. "I'll tell you that much, Angelo. That's our goal, to make sure we have another one of those parades."

Roseman went on to rave about the entire roster. When asked about the secondary, specifically, Roseman said "there's no doubt" it'll be much better this year than in previous seasons.

Most notably, Roseman raved about Jalen Mills who is moving from corner to safety.

"The guy I can't wait to see play is Jalen Mills," Roseman said. "He's got range, he's athleticism, he's got a corner skill set. Unfortunately, the past couple of years for us where we were from a corner position, we haven't had the chance to do it. But this guy man, one of the first days of Training Camp he asked coach if he could break the team down. He's got so much juice, so much leadership ability. That's our guy right there. I'm really excited to see him at the safety position."

The 24-year-old defensive back is entering his fifth NFL season, all with Philadelphia, after being selected by the Eagles in the seventh round of the 2016 draft. Mills has played in just 17 combined games over the past two seasons dealing wit multiple foot injuries, but signed a one-year contract in March to remain with the team.

The Eagles added top free-agent corner Darius Slay this offseason and let veteran safety Malcolm Jenkins leave, creating an an opportunity for Mills to move from cornerback to safety, the position where he played most of snaps during his collegiate days at LSU.

Mills has four career interceptions, 37 pass deflections, and one touchdown in his 48 NFL regular season games thus far. He's also started in four playoff games, tallying five pass deflections in three games during the Eagles' Super Bowl run in 2017-18.
