Indy columnist angrily rips Carson Wentz, would 'help pack his bags' if released

If the Indianapolis Star suddenly got an influx of subscribers from the Philadelphia area, it would typically be a surprise. But after longtime columnist Gregg Doyel's latest article, it would be a surprise if there wasn't a massive jolt of Philly-based subscriptions coming in.

Because — and I really don't want to undersell just how much Doyel tears into the quarterback — Carson Wentz gets brutally ripped in his latest column. Wentz was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday after coming in close contact with a team staff member, and that was the final straw for Doyel, who had been denouncing Wentz's behavior and decisions in recent days (see the video at the top of the page for 94WIP's breakdown of one of Doyel's pieces.) The Indy Star explained that "if, as reported by NFL Network, Wentz is a close contact, then he is unvaccinated based on the NFL protocols," as vaccinated players would not be designated as a close contact.

"Why have I been all over Wentz for being unvaccinated? This is why," Doyel tweeted after the news that Wentz was placed on the COVID list. "Because he's got the No. 1 leadership position in sports, and not leading at all. Not the team, not the community, nobody."

He then expanded on that more with a full column.

So what are some of the highlights of Doyel's rant on Wentz and the other apparently unvaccinated Colts who were placed on the COVID-19 list, or who made their anti-vaccine thoughts known publicly? Here are a few for you to enjoy (h/t Brian Fonseca of NJ Advance Media).

— "The Indianapolis Colts could release Carson Wentz right now, and I'd help pack his bags. Where does he live? Because he'll need a ride to the airport."

— "Carson Wentz is the worst of the bunch, in a football sense, because he's the most important player on the team. He's the most indispensable player on roster, and the Colts have no idea if he'll make it through any given week without having to go back onto the COVID-19 list simply for being too close to a teammate who tests positive. I'll remind you that, when the Colts acquired Wentz, I defended his arrival despite the reports out of Philadelphia that had called him a bad teammate. And selfish.

— "Turns out Carson Wentz is a bad teammate. He's selfish. Turns out he fits right into this Colts locker room."

Wow. All things considered, doesn't it feel pretty good to have a quarterback that the team is rallying around — not to mention one with a versatile skill set and a pretty high ceiling — and who's vaccinated? I sure think so.
