Jason Kelce on Jalen Hurts running the ball vs. keeping him healthy

Jason Kelce talked about the unique challenge of protecting an extremely mobile quarterback in Jalen Hurts and how the Philadelphia Eagles should approach protecting the star QB versus allowing him to run freely.

"It is certainly something that is very, very focused on by the staff as a whole," Kelce admitted on Wednesday's 94WIP Morning Show live from Eagles Training Camp before the start of the first practice. "We want to obviously take advantage of the advantages that Jalen Hurts has. To not run him at all would be a disservice to the team and to himself, and to the things that he brings to the table.

"But I think there are ways to do it that are, one advantageous to the offense, but also two, do it in a pretty safe way. I think there's a good medium that we've toed a good bit and I think they are going to continue to do that.

"There's a way to do it, I believe, while making him run less but still making the defense respect that...I think it would be a disservice to him to stop doing all of that and to go to a more pro style offense. That being said, I think there are ways to scheme things up and to do things that can virtually assure an outcome...There's also ways to, even if you do keep the ball, is to get down, avoid hits. And I think that that's another option with this whole thing as well."

Hurts had 139 rushing attempts in 2021 and then another 165 last season. He rushed for 23 touchdowns over the last two seasons, but he also suffered a shoulder injury at the end of last season, forcing him to miss three games.
