Jason Kelce explains why Nick Sirianni is a 'great coach'

Jason Kelce on 94WIP every Thursday 7:30-8:30am

Jason Kelce was asked about Nick Sirianni's role as Philadelphia Eagles' head coach three days after the team's Week 2 loss at home against the Atlanta Falcons.

"I know he's a great coach," Kelce told Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie on Thursday's 94WIP Morning Show.

"Listen, he's not calling plays, obviously. There are a handful of coaches, two of which were in both of the championship games [last season] in Dan Campbell and John Harbaugh that don't do that. The reality is there is a mold where as a head coach you are really an organizational leadership linchpin. We saw that I think a little bit with Pete Carroll a little bit throughout the years...It's tough to know what all the other coaches do. I think there is incredible merit to having somebody is kind of the center of command in all of this and their main job is to steer the team in the right direction. And they do that with one great knowledge of the game, but also two great personal relationships, great character and I think that Nick does all of that well. He's a great communicator, he really is."

Sirianni, in his fourth season as Eagles' head coach, has given up offensive play calling duties to new coordinator Kellen Moore. However, Sirianni is taking heat for the team's decision to throw the ball with 1:46 to go in the game deep in the Falcons' territory while holding a three-point lead. The play resulted in a dropped pass by Saquon Barkley, stopping the clock for the timeout-less Falcons, who drove down the field to score a game-winning touchdown after the Eagles kicked a field goal.
