Jeffrey Lurie’s son, Julian Lurie, now has an official role with the team he will likely one day be running.
Julian Lurie’s job title with the team will be Business and Football Operations Strategy, according to Bo Wulf of The Athletic, a role that reflects his involvement in both the “football operations and business sides of the organization.”
Julian Lurie taking an official title with the team isn’t surprising and has been in the works for some time. He was very present at this year’s Senior Bowl, attending practices with his father, Jeffery, as well as Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni.
Lurie spoke openly at this year’s league meetings about the likely reality that Julian will one day take over the team, and how it is important to prepare him for that likelihood.
“He’s going to have so much more going into it than I ever did if he chooses to want to someday own and run the team. I mean, he’s going to have a gigantic advantage,” Lurie said. “He loves all aspects of it. And so what I do is expose him at different times to different things. I let him observe coaching searches. Those are big decisions to make. I think he gets exposure to the business side, football side. And inevitably it’ll be more of a formal aspect to it if he aspires to do that.”
Lurie taking an official role with the team is good news for Eagles fans. The reality is that the Eagles are going to be in the Lurie family for a long time. The worst case scenario would have been Julian swooping in at the last minute to take over whenever the day does come that Jeffrey decides to step away from his day-to-day operations with the team.
By preparing Julian now for the eventual day he does run the team, he will be far more prepared and the transition will go much smoother than it might have if he didn’t spend time with the team prior to taking over.
