PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Eagles are getting ready to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII. The Birds don’t match up with Kansas City a lot, but the two teams did play last year in Week 4 of the regular season.

The last time these two teams met was at the Linc on Oct. 3, 2021. The Eagles had early 3-0 and 10-7 leads, but the Chiefs took a 14-10 lead in the second quarter and never looked back.

It was a frustrating game for the Birds — their three touchdowns were negated by penalties.

On offense, the Eagles moved the ball with Jalen Hurts — who was making just his eighth career start. He threw for what is still a career high, 387 yards, and two touchdowns that counted. He also rushed for a team high 47 yards.

Head coach Nick Sirianni on Tuesday said he rewatched that game and continues to be impressed by Hurts’ performance and growth.

“Some of the things you see there are like — man, he continues to get better. He had a great game this day, but he continues to get better,” said Sirianni. “And that’s the type of guy he is. He just strives to get better each day.”

The Eagles defense really struggled in that 2021 matchup. Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for five touchdowns, three of which went to Tyreek Hill — who, of course, is now with the Miami Dolphins.

The Birds did contain the Chiefs’ fantastic tight end, Travis Kelce, holding him to four catches for just 23 yards.

The Chiefs ultimately won that game 42-30 and improved to 2-2. Mahomes also finished with 278 yards passing and 26 yards rushing.

But that game marked the Eagles’ third straight loss, and they fell to 1-3. Many started to question whether Sirianni should have been hired in the first place.

A year later, bound for another Super Bowl stint, it’s safe to say things have turned around.
