Kelly Green! New NFL rule means Eagles can bring back classic uniforms

It seems Jeffrey Lurie's fight with the NFL over his desire to wear the Kelly Green uniforms has has come to an end — and it is a battle he has won.

According to Pro Football Talk, the NFL sent a memo out to teams on Thursday that they will be allowed to use two different helmets starting in the 2022 season.

Why does this matter, especially to Lurie?

PFT's Mike Florio explains:

Teams can pair the second helmet with alternate, throwback or Color Rush uniforms, so long as they follow all league policies on ensuring that all alternate helmets are properly fitted, and that all players are provided with sufficient opportunity to wear the alternate helmets in practice prior to wearing them in a game.

With the rule change the Eagles will now be allowed to wear a Kelly Green helmet, which as been the issue for Lurie over the past few years. Currently if the Eagles wanted to wear the Kelly Green uniforms they would have to wear the same midnight green helmet they wear every week. Lurie has said, understandably, in the past he is not a fan of how that would look.

Now, with the new rule, Lurie's Eagles can wear the Kelly Green uniforms with a Kelly Green helmet, while also wearing the midnight green look in other games during the season.

While it it unlikely the Eagles will ever make a complete switch back to Kelly Green, Lurie has been clear about his desire to wear the uniform at times during the season as an alternate jersey.

Now, with the rule change, he can begin doing that in 2022 -- and there is no question that is exactly what he will do.
