There are not many individuals who are as plugged in to the Eagles organization than Adam Caplan is.
The NFL Insider previewed the first round with Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie on Thursday morning and dropped an unexpected and big statement saying he "wouldn't rule out a quarterback" for the Eagles in round one.
Even after the Eagles traded out of the No. 6 overall pick, the chatter of the Eagles taking a quarterback persists and for good reason. Here is why Caplan thinks it's still very much on the table.
"I would look at it this way," Caplan said on Thursday morning. "I've done a lot of work on the type of offense Nick Sirianni is going to run. The kind of offense is more West Coast based, even more than Doug Pederson's. It's going to be timing, get out of the quarterback's hands, not so much downfield but run after the catch. It puts a major premium, not that accuracy isn't important, of course it is, but even moreso than Pederson's offense, accuracy is major here, not so much arm strength. Justin Fields is super accurate. Mac Jones is super accurate. Trey Lance to me is more of a long term project.
"Those are the quarterbacks right there. After what the Eagles have done at the quarterback position… It tells me that the Eagles are unsettled at that quarterback position right now."
One of the knocks on Jalen Hurts' game coming into the 2020 NFL Draft was his passing ability, specifically making late throws and lacking a "rifle arm". It's possible the Eagles unwillingness to commit to Hurts is centered around their uncertainty in Sirianni's offensive schemes. Hurts finished the 2020 season with a 52% completion rating, yet the Eagles struggled in their short passing attack, forcing Hurts to attempt 10+ yard passes on almost half his throws.
The Eagles have certainly been unpredictable when it comes to the draft the last few years. The oddness of taking a quarterback fits that mold.
