The Philadelphia Eagles have named Kevin Patullo as their new offensive coordinator.
Here are 5 takeaways of mine from the hire:
** I do not like the idea of promoting from within. It didn’t work in 2018 and it didn’t work in 2023. I think there needs to be new eyes on the offense to keep from getting stale and that doesn’t happen from promoting from within. That has nothing to do with Patullo as a coach, I just think this was a chance to hire from outside the building and get fresh ideas.
** That being said I have been impressed in the times Patullo has talked. I can see why the Eagles would want to keep him in the building. Especially why Nick Sirianni would want to keep him. If Sirianni wanted him I think that should matter.
** Patullo has described his role prior to being named OC as being part head coach, part OC. So he has been very very involved in everything that has happened.
** Patullo has never called plays at the NFL level. That isn’t the end of the world, as Sirianni/Hurts are very involved in the play calling, but noteworthy.
** The key for Patullo will be what new ideas does he bring. He’s been in the building. It’s hard to imagine he has new ideas that weren’t implemented.
Ike Reese gave his thoughts on the hire, as well, supporting the hire.
"What this says to me is that everyone is on the same page," Reese said.
