Did the Philadelphia Eagles franchise, fans, and media make the same mistake twice? Is Jalen Hurts regressing just as Carson Wentz did a few years ago?
A caller, Ken, on today's 94WIP Midday Show made the point that this is the exact same situation and Joe Giglio agreed.
"We don't want to compare this to Carson Wentz, I get it, but everything about this is the same as Carson Wentz," the caller said on Tuesday. "The quarterback is killing the football team. Every week he makes decisions with the football that make you just sit there with your mouth agate. And then you get the section of the fan base that will call up and reflexively defend him and blame everyone else. Everything about this! You could play tapes from 2020 shows on a loop and if you didn't mention the guys name, they would be the exact same conversation."
"I agree, it's eerily similar," Giglio said. "Eerily. The way we talk about it is. Because people didn't want to recognize it was going to the wrong. Ken's point is, people ignored the truth."
After a marvelous 2022 season where he finished second in the MVP race and lost in the Super Bowl, Jalen Hurts signed a $255 million contract extension with the Eagles in April.
This season, Hurts has been playing through a knee injury and has 17 turnovers (12 INT, 5 FL) in 14 games. The Eagles are 10-4, but have lost their last three games and Hurts has not played well over that stretch.
The Eagles signed Wentz to a $128 million contract extension in June of 2019, after the team won the Super Bowl in 2018. Wentz was recovering from a December 2017 ACL tear and had pedestrian 2018 regular season where he went 5-6 as a starter in 11 games. Wentz was never the same and traded to the Colts in March of 2021.
