Sirianni admits concern of overusing D'Andre Swift is 'valid'

Joe DeCamara asked Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni if he's worried about overusing running back D'Andre Swift, who has nearly the double the amount of carries as Kenneth Gainwell.

"Yeah, that's a valid point," Sirianni admitted on Tuesday's 94WIP Morning Show. "We think a lot about that, we think a lot about the touches.

"As far as D'Andre goes, we're trying to get him touches, both in the run game and in the pass game," Sirianni said. "But we also understand that we want to able to spread it around, just like we do with the wide receiver group and the tight end group, we also want to do that with the run game as well. But we will ride the hot hand and D'Andre has had the hot hand, that's just the way it has been. If Kenny gets the hot hand, we'll ride his hand. And if Boston gets the hot hand, we'll ride that hand. That goes in ebbs and flows and D'Andre has just been playing really well, we want to give him touches."

Swift has 76 carries to Gainwell's 39 through five games, while Boston Scott and Rashaad Penny have just nine combined rushing attempts through five games.

"What we think a lot about is how we preserve the guys throughout the entire season, isn't just a game day decision," Sirianni explained. "Your question is very valid, but it is also what we do with them in practice...We're thinking a lot about that Monday through Saturday so we're able to go all out and do what we're able to do to win every game on Sunday...You're just going to see Sunday, and that's OK, and that's why you asked me the question."

Swift has been extremely productive with his touches, accumulating 434 rushing yards on those aforementioned 76 carries, good for fourth best in the NFL.

However, the 24-year-old 5'9" back has dealt with injury concerns throughout his career and has never had more than 151 rushing attempts in a season.

Swift's highest number of rushes per game was 11.6 in 2021 with the Detroit Lions. This season, Swift is averaging 15.2 rushes per game and 19.0 per game if you remove Week 1, where he played just 29-percent of the offensive snaps and had just one carry.
