Irving Fryar: Jalen Hurts lacks ability to throw ball in tight spots

Irving Fryar in-studio with the 94WIP Morning Show

Former Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl wide receiver Irving Fryar says Jalen Hurts lacks the ability to throw balls into tight windows.

"One of the things I see with Jalen in his throwing is that he lacks the ability to throw the ball in tight spots when you need to have zip on the ball, when you need to throw the ball on a rope," Fryar said on Monday's 94WIP Morning Show.

"Perfect example, the [Trevon] Diggs interception with Dallas. I think the week before, Cincinnati was 4th-and-3 and he was trying to throw the ball to A.J. Brown crossing the field. It needed to have zip on the ball and I think he lacked—when you watch his motion, he almost kind of winds up a bit. He throws a great deep ball, throws a slant good. Those shorts passes because he's only throwing the ball about 12 yards...But when the receiver is 15 yards down the field, 20 yards down the field and you got to throw that ball on a line because the moment of separation only lasts for a second. And you got to get that ball in that hole in that space right now!"

Fryar, who joined Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie in-studio talking Philadelphia sports and taking calls from 8:40am-10:00am on Monday, also spoke about Eagles rookie phenom cornerback Quinyon Mitchell.

"Here's how good Quinyon is, was it Terry McLaurin," Fryar said. "He played the Eagles 10 times [prior to Thursday's game] he had good games. In those 10 games, he had good games—58 catches, 847 yards and four touchdowns. You know how many catches he had the other day, Thursday? He had one catch. Two targets, one catch. They like to line him up on the left side. He had no catches on the left side. He got that one catch on the right side against Cooper DeJean."

Fryar's hottest take was when it came to the NBA and the Philadelphia 76ers, calling Joel Embiid "soft."

"I don't know when we are going to realize—and when I say we I mean the Philadelphia sports fans," Fryar said. "When we're going to realize we're not going to win a championship with Joel Embiid as the touted leader of the Philadelphia 76ers. He's just not that guy. He doesn't have, what I call—what some of us would call—the dog that you need in you to lead a team. And he's hurt way too much, he makes too many excuses, and to me he's just soft."
