The Eagles might go to another former backup as head coach.

Shortly after Doug Pederson was fired on Monday, a report from the NFL Network emerged that the Eagles could be interested in Kansas City Chiefs quarterback coach Mike Kafka.

Kafka was on the Eagles during the 2011 season, attempting just 16 passes in a backup role.

Kafka has worked with the Kansas City Chiefs since retiring from the NFL, starting as an offensive quality control coach in 2017 before ebbing promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2018. In 2020 he was promoted to the passing game coordinator as well.

Hiring Kafka likely wouldn’t be a very popular or inspiring decision amongst the fans, but it likely would allow Jeffrey Lurie and Howie Roseman to surround him with the coaches they prefer — something that ended up being the main issue Pederson is no longer the head coach.
