Report: Eagles still might fire Doug Pederson

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie might still move on from head coach Doug Pederson, according to an ESPN report.

The report states that the two will meet again soon and that a move could be made if Lurie is not confident in Pederson’s vision moving forward.

Chances are that any issue between the two sides would involve play calling and the coaching staff. If Lurie is not confident in Pederson’s ability to call the offense, or build a staff, he could try to take those responsibilities from Pederson. If Pederson pushes back, a divorce could be coming.

The report raises some obvious — and important — questions.

If Lurie is indeed still open to moving on from Pederson, are the Eagles putting themselves at a disadvantage in hiring a new coach, as other teams are already deep into the process of interviews. The Eagles, meanwhile, would have wasted at least a week — if not longer — in trying to find Pederson’s replacement.

It is also worth asking if Pederson could be traded. A Pro Football Talk report on Saturday indicted that there is a belief that a head-coach trade could be happening. If the Eagles are holding onto Pederson, but might still move on, it is possible they believe a trade might happen, allowing them to recoup something for losing Pederson.

Finally, if Pederson is gone, it is fair to wonder if that increases the chances of Carson Wentz returning. A recent report indicated that the duo’s relationship was fractured “beyond repair.” Moving on from Pederson could be indication that Wentz will be back, and that the franchise quarterback would backoff of his apparent desire to go elsewhere.
